How To Remain Persistent Towards Your Success!
Success Tips You Could Learn From The Movie "Hidden Figures" SUMMARY
Three beautiful African American women in the prime of their careers help NASA with the successful launch of it's first space expeditions, whilst fighting through the societal limitations of not only being "women",but also African American. Katherine Johnson,Dorothy Vaughan & Mary Jackson "portrayed by Taraji P Henson,Octavia Spencer & Janelle Monae respectively", the brilliant mathematician minds behind the program were able to create massive shifts in NASA's & America's history.
Upon first hearing about the movie from a collegue I had a business meeting the night before, I was intrigued by the story line and wanted to know more. I wanted to know what the real deal was and what I could learn from it. Of course,my curious cat never got killed for wanting to educate herself, even via a quick 2 hour wine and movie night, therefore my Friday night revolved around that.
Following the recent #womensmatch in January, it's safe to say that women want to be super empowered regardless of their skin color. Now,I admit that I do not live in America, and have never felt the need to proove my worth to another race, but I imagine the ordeal they are faced with on the daily "and I know that I will probablty get some raised eybrows for this but", so it remains.
Bu that is not the main focus here. The aim of this post is to provide you with some key ingredients to succeeding at whatever you decide to journey into,be it your studies, business or life in general...
Be Adamant In Obtaining Your Goal
One of my favourite scenes was when Mary Jackson "aspiring engineer in Nasa's Program also portrayed by Janelle Monae" finds out that her dreams might be crush because she does not possess the "prerequisites" to apply for the position. The hard news deliverer "with joy fyi" tries to make it difficult for her to try,but does she give up. Absolutely NOT!! Mary Jackson then petitions with the court to enroll into a segregated high school in order to attain what she NEEDS to get to that OUTCOME. BECOMING A NASA ENGINEER. Of course with sheer determination, resilience and doing her research she converts the judge into allowing her to become the very first African American female engineer in Nasa's Space Program.
The Message - You might be working towards your goals, creating your business, trying to live a healthier lifestyle, something for your betterment, and there may be times when the curveballs will hit you unknowingly. And these curveballs might sometimes take human form. Be adamant.Be focused and continue to do whatever you need to in order to get to where you want.
Be Resourceful and SPEAK YOUR MIND
My favourite character was Katherine Johnson "the human computer who eventually tries to be replaced by the IBM-fyi I only found out what IBM stands for tonight". Katherine Johnson enters the realm of "vulnerability" where she is underestimated for her the value she could give to the team. A team of men and 1 woman. She is ridiculed and given part of the information she needs in order to perform her everyday duties;which of course deems overwhelming and not ideal. Not only that, she is ridden with the burden of "segregated washrooms" and finds herself rushing an approximate 40 minutes across the property "to her assigned washroom" just to relieve herself. The one thing I loved about Taraji's character in hidden figures most was her resourcefulness. Being able to utilise the resources she had in order to obtain her results. She knows that it will take an almost hour "of running btw" across buildings, therefore she carries her work with her so that she "multitasks". Have you ever multitasked while on the potty.. I know I have " TMI lol". Of course a woman can take so much so she begins to ASK FOR WHAT SHE WANTS. You can only do so much with what you have for so long. Until you add to the resource pool. Slowly sometimes, and sometimes fast. At her breaking point, Katherine Johnson finally speaks her mind and explodes her feelings "although she did timidly during the 2 hour stream"except this time, it was full force.
The message- You can take. You can take and accept and utilise your resources, your circumstances for only so long.but NEVER ALLOW your circumstances to take control of you. Be ready to OWN YOUR CONTROL at some point, or else you will keep yourself behind.
Be Ready & Willing To Learn. And Be Persistent About It
Character three "Dorothy Vaughan portrayed by Octavia Spencer" is far from the silent but the outspoken one..she knows exactly what she wants and she takes account of her resource pool whilst consistently adding to it what she needs.Octavia has her eyes set on a supervisory position, which she keeps being shut down for by her superiors because of her skin color. Yet she never gives up. And even though she gets frustrated about it sometimes, she is perfect at maintaining her cool about it. There is one scene in the movie Hidden Figures, which takes place in a library. A library where she goes to find a computing book that is going to solidify her momentum up the success ladder. Of course, with the segregation she is thrown out,but but not before she has the chance to "take as she puts it since she pays taxes" the book she so desires. Why did she take it? Because it was unavailable to her. Of course she remains persistent in learning all she can, and about getting that supervisory position & often drops a hit to her superior every chance she gets.Even if she gets shut down. In the end of course she gets her desired outcome.
The Message - What we need to learn might seem unavailable to us at the time. And the resources we need will also sometimes seem out of reach, but only if you allow it. In this technological age, everything is at our fingertips...literally. The intertnet is VAST and ever growing with information. Good and Bad... The choice on what do with it lies within you and no one else.
Overall, it was a really great movie which held an insightful message. Have you see it?If you have what lessons did you learn from it. Or what tip did you extract. Let's discuss in the comments section below & of course as always
Until next time...Menellia
